Land Rover Going Green

                         Land Rover Going Green

The race against the clock is on for Land Rover to adapt itself to a world where CO2 emissions count. Currently Land Rover’s range of heavy, powerful sport utility vehicles puts it in a potentially dangerous spot for the future where the European Union’s impending legislations threaten to wipe out the great off-roader altogether. As such, Land Rover and Jaguar have announced a £700m ($1.4 bn US/CAD) investment into making their vehicles leaner and greener.

The first move was unveiled last week at the Frankfurt auto show, an LR2 with a stop and start system to prevent idling. The system will first debut on the TD4 turbodiesel model with manual transmission, due to its ease of integration. Land Rover says that this change, applicable around the globe to all of its TD4-powered LR2s would save 10 million tons of CO2 per year, based on the annual production of 28,000 units traveling 24,000 km (15,000 mi) apiece. However, you can bet that as a part of the investment, Land Rover will be adding it to its other vehicles, especially those with bigger V8s that drink more fuel.

Hyundai Canada Launches Exclusive Performance Parts Division

Posted in Green, Land Rover | 6 Comments »

Hyundai and performance? Most who conjure up images of the South Korean brand probably wouldn’t immediately equate the two terms as synonymous, unless they’ve spent time in the automaker’s sporty Tiburon coupe or taken a spin in someone’s hopped up Accent.

Yes, the budget brand has a performance-oriented following and its smallest entry has become more popular with the tuner crowd since the newest version debuted last year, while the racy Tiburon has always found buyers willing to spend thousands to personalize it with large diameter wheels, lower profile tires, ground effects kits, customized paint and big, phat audio systems, but overall most young buyers would probably think to purchase a Honda, Mazda or VW for tuning purposes before a Hyundai.

SSC Ultimate Aero TT: The Fastest Car in the World

The title of World’s Fastest Production Car is back on the table. Over the past five years, this title has changed hands time and time again, going from Britain’s McLaren to Sweden’s Koenigsegg to the king of supercars, the Bugatti Veyron. Its next move will see it travel across the Atlantic Ocean to a small super car maker founded in Washington State, SSC.

New Military Jeep

Before Jeep became the legendary off-road brand that it is today, it got its start by producing vehicles for the military. The original Jeep (the Willys MB) served its tour in WWII and other battles, and from there, as they say, the rest is history. After being absent from military duty for years, Chrysler LLC has just announced a new military Jeep based on the Wrangler called the J8.

Toyota iQ Concept, Tiny But Brilliant

Besides the fairly obvious trend of being green, another theme of this year’s Frankfurt auto show is downsizing. Earlier this week we saw the unveiling of the rear-engined, rear-wheel drive micro-compact Volkswagen Up!. But the Up! won’t go unchallenged for the most innovative form of city-friendly transportation around, especially not since the unveiling of the Toyota iQ Concept vehicle.

Fiat Concepts Built for Green and Speed

Italian auto conglomerate Fiat will be introducing a pair of new concept vehicles at Frankfurt, frugal performance seeming to be the theme.

Grande Punto Abarth essesse

Having grounded itself in a state of strong finances and good automobiles after some rather tumultuous times, Fiat is now back in stride and focusing on its heritage. Back in the day, Fiat’s performance brand was called “Abarth” (the small Turin-based company founded by Carlo Abarth was taken over by Fiat in July of ‘71) and it produced potent versions of such classic vehicles as the 500.

MINI SUV to be Built by Magna?

MINI has been in the news lately with regards to the forthcoming Clubman model, the much awaited MINI Cooper wagon. Much like the internationally-inspired wagon concepts, the new Clubman will feature a rear-hinged access (suicide) door plus an extended wheelbase for much-needed extra interior room. Undisguised interior and exterior spy shots have already made their way onto the internet and it’s common knowledge that the car will be debuting this September in Frankfurt. But what’s also got MINI in the news is word regarding a forthcoming compact sport utility vehicle, filling in the niche that smart didn’t when the formore compact SUV was canned.

Next Generation Volkswagen Phaeton to be Both Sedan and Roadster?

If at first you don’t succeed, try again. This appears to be the motto that Volkswagen is taking with regards to its ultra-luxury sedan, the Phaeton.

The Phaeton was an excellent vehicle, the perfect demonstration of what an automaker with brilliant engineers can do if it chooses not to concern itself with budget constraints. Built with immaculate precision, the highest quality and newest technology, the Phaeton was a truly impressive vehicle. The only problem is that it was a sales flop. It failed to capture the North American market due to image-related problems. Consumers didn’t feel compelled to invest considerable amounts of money in an entry-level brand that also produces Golfs, Jettas and Beetles. But just because the Phaeton didn’t make it in North America doesn’t mean that it’s a dud elsewhere in the world. In other markets, including its home country of Germany, it recently received a mid-cycle update that focused on appearances and technology similar to the changes made to the Touareg 2. And that mild facelift makes it clear that Volkswagen is getting ready to bring the next generation Phaeton to market in a couple of years.

Ford Kuga Compact Crossover

While the now profitable Ford Motor Company has been in the spotlight regarding the sale of the brands that the comprise Premiere Auto Group, its European division will have something new to show come this September at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Ford is practically the only major mainstream manufacturer in Europe to not offer a compact sport utility vehicle (or a sport utility vehicle whatsoever) since it withdrew the Maverick (Escape) from the market during the early part of the decade. The car that will be shown at Frankfurt is a refined version of the iosis X concept that was displayed at last year’s Paris auto show, and should fill in this much-needed gap nicely.

Subaru Will Offer Gearless CVT Transmission

Posted in Crossover, Ford, SUV | 2 Comments »

The gearless CVT transmission comes and goes in waves of popularity. Previously isolated to European and Japanese-market city cars, they’ve become an aide in the modern quest for fuel-efficient vehicles around the world. Without physical ratios or a torque converter, they’re more efficient than their regular automatic transmission counterparts, but are prone to what’s called the rubber band effect where the engine’s speed rises disproportionately to the speed of the car.

Volkswagen to Hit International Market With Chinese-Built Car

After much delay, the deal between Chrysler and China’s Chery, to build a brand new subcompact car, is finally underway. The upcoming Chinese-built Dodge is already undergoing scrutiny by the brand’s engineers to ensure that quality and safety are up to spec. Chrysler is even going so far as to first launch the vehicle in less critical markets that have less demanding standards, to judge how it performs before selling it in North America.

Another Chinese brand that’s supposedly heading our way is Brilliance Auto, assembly partner to BMW, which reportedly assisted in the styling and production techniques of their cars. The brand was recently put in the spotlight for the extremely poor crash test results (1-star) of its BS6 sedan in a simulation EuroNCAP crash test. Even after one of its two European distributors closed up shop and the brand pulled out of the NYSE, internally Brilliance and its prospective North America distributor maintains that all is still a go for a North American launch early next year.

Kia Sports Coupe to Debut at Geneva

Since his first project with Kia, the ex_cee’d cabrio concept car, Peter Schreyer has been hard at work on several new projects in an attempt to change the way people think of the budget Korean carmaker. It’s starting to work, as the compact cee’d has really spiced things up for the brand. Critics were truly impressed with the dynamic characteristics of the hatchback, not to mention its first-rate interior quality and first rate fit and finish. Buyers now have other reasons to buy one of their products besides the excellent warranty and the truly affordable prices. Kia now wants to add stylish designs to the list of reasons for purchasing one of their cars, and their forthcoming sports coupe looks to be the vehicle to do it.

Ferrari Ultra-Light F430 Scuderia

Weight is everything when it comes to sports cars. Reducing weight allows manufacturers to produce cars that handle better, accelerate quicker, and stop faster. Weight (or a lack thereof) is what allows vehicles like the Caterham 7 and Ariel Atom to outperform and embarrass much more powerful and costly cars, despite their significantly smaller and less powerful engines. This is why many brands make such a big deal out of putting their top cars on diets, such as the Porsche 911 GT3-RS, BMW M3 CSL and the new Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera.

Chrysler Crossfire Trudges On Despite Slow Sales

When Chrysler brought its premium-grade Crossfire coupe to market in 2003 as a 2004 model, there were more than a few that questioned its potential for success. Even at the launch program Chrysler’s executives talked more about the car being an image builder for Chrysler, and an example of the brand’s cooperative development with then-owner Mercedes-Benz (a.k.a. Daimler), than anything about sales volumes.

Chrysler Stops Imperial Production and Prepares for New 300

Commonly referred to as “the poor man’s Rolls-Royce”, the Chrysler Imperial was scheduled to enter production by the end of the decade. Though the current 300 has served the brand well, helping to create a more luxurious image for the smallest member of the Big Three, having a true flagship vehicle to compete with Ford’s Lincoln and GM’s Cadillac was felt to be necessary. The car debuted in concept form two years ago at the North American International Auto Show, complete with rear-hinged doors and a bluff front end that mimicked the look of the ultra-swanky Phantom.

Mercedes Builds ML Edition10 to Celebrate 10 Years of US-Built Cars

A lot can happen in the time span of a decade. We’ve seen brands die, brands created and the rise, fall and struggle of some unexpected automakers. The past ten years also saw the dramatic increase in the price of fuel, which resulted in the quest for alternative fuels such as E85 and hydrogen, not to mention clean diesel technology and advent of the hybrid. Ten years also happens to mark the amount of time that Mercedes-Benz has been building vehicles in North America at its Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama.

General Motors to Bring More Clean Diesels to North American Market

After suffering a bout of unpopularity in North America, diesel power is finally returning to favour. Automakers are developing extra clean diesel engines capable of overcoming extremely tough emissions controls, which are also smooth, powerful, rich in torque and easy on the wallet. Thanks to technology developed and refined in Europe, North Americans will be treated to the latest generation of engines that feature piezoelectric injectors and variable geometry turbochargers. These engines have already started to appear on ML-, R- and GL-Class Mercedes-Benzes and Jeep’s Grand Cherokee, and will appear next year in the new Volkswagen Jetta TDI and Tiguan TDI. Other automakers have pledged to enter the battle by the end of the decade, including BMW, Honda, Hyundai and Subaru.

JAGUAR

                            Jaguar XF

The Jaguar XF is a mid-size luxury car / sports saloon produced by British car manufacturer Jaguar Cars. The car, which replaced the Jaguar S-Type, was launched at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show[1][2] following the public showing of the C-XF concept in January 2007 at the North American International Auto Show. Designed by Jaguar's design director Ian Callum,[3] it was a significant change to its predecessor.
The XF went on sale in 2008 with a range of V6 and V8 engines[4] and customer deliveries commenced in March 2008.[5]

The styling of the finalised production XF varies from that of the C-XF, most notably around the front lights and nose, which incorporates an oval mesh grille harking back to the original XJ of 1968. The boot lid retained the S-Type's chromed blade to its edge, but also included a "leaper" Jaguar logo as well.
The XF was developed at Jaguar's Whitley design and development HQ in Coventry, UK and is built in Castle Bromwich, Birmingham, UK. During its development the XF was known by its code name X250.[6]
The interior included some unique features such as the air-conditioning vents which are flush-fitting in the dash, rotating open once the engine is started, and a rotating gearshift dial called the JaguarDrive Selector which rises out of the centre console.[7] Another departure from the traditional Jaguar cabin ambiance is the use of pale-blue backlighting to the instruments, switchgear, and around major control panels. Some minor systems, such as the interior lighting, are controlled simply by touching the plastic light covers. The glove compartment also opens to the touch. Unusually the XF has no cloth interior option, with even the most basic model being fully trimmed in leather to even areas that have employed plastic on previous Jaguars. Real wood veneers are available, but have been joined by aluminium trim to create a modern look to the passenger compartment.
Aerodynamics
The car body was developed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) before the car ever saw a wind tunnel. Every area from the outer skin to the lightweight, composite undertray to the cooling airflow (even the shape of the exterior mirrors) was optimised using this process. The higher, squarer tail is more efficient aerodynamically than a lower, rounded one, and the XF’s coupé-like roofline and raised bootlid lip improve airflow over the rear of the car. As a result, the XF has the best aerodynamic performance, in terms of drag, of any production Jaguar ever and is better than the race-bred, limited edition XJ220 supercar.
The XF’s drag coefficient is 0.29, and the front-to-rear lift balance is precisely zero. This aerodynamic performance minimises wind noise, reduces fuel consumption, and aids strong high-speed stability and handling.[citation needed]
[edit]Chassis
The basic sub-structure of the XF has been carried over from the S-Type, although the body has been stretched to meet crash safety requirements, and heightened to provide additional headroom while still retaining the "saloon within a coupé" proportions. The suspension and mountings are the same as that used on the XK, while the engine line-up is basically similar to that used in the S-Type.
Sound and vibration insulation is provided by the addition of a special underbody tray and engine mounts, a tuned exhaust system, and a double bulkhead between the engine bay and passenger compartment.

]Diesel engines
The XF was launched with a 2.7 L V6 diesel, which was replaced 2009 was replaced with a new 3.0 V6 diesel AJ-V6D Gen III[8]in two states of tune.[9] The diesel engines are a product of the joint venture between Ford and Peugeot-Citroën. [10]
[edit]Petrol engines
The XF featured two petrol engines at launch, 3.0 L V6 and a 4.2 L V8. The launch V8 supercharged derivative was called the SV8,[11] and in some export markets such as the US, it was known as the Supercharged.
A new 5.0L V8 AJ133 GEN III engine was launched in 2009, which replaced the 4.2 V8 in most markets. The north American market retained the 4.2 L V8 as an option until 2010, as the 3.0 V6 was not made available. The supercharged version of the new V8 engined was used in the new XKR sports model.
[edit]Transmission
The XF was launched only with automatic transmission, with no manual option. The ZF 6HP28 six-speed automatic with torque converter lock-up, which was programmed to shift 10% quicker than before,[clarification needed] and can be manually selected using paddles behind the steering wheel. Gear changes are made using a rotary dial that rises from the centre console once the engine start/stop button has been pressed.
XFR: 2009
The XFR was announced at the Detroit North American International Auto Show in January 2009 as a new performance derivative of the XK range, and featured the new 5.0-litre Supercharged AJ-V8 Gen III engine rated 510 PS (375 kW; 503 hp), a revised front bumper and spoiler and 20-inch (510 mm)-inch alloy wheels.[13][14]
[edit]XFR prototype record breaker
On November 7 2008, a modified XFR was driven by Paul Gentilozzi of Rocketsports, who prepared the car, to a new Jaguar record of 225.675 mph (363.189 km/h) on theBonneville Salt Flats. The new record beat the previous Jaguar record of 217.1mph in a XJ220 in 1992.[15] Changes to the stock vehicle included low-mounted rear spoiler, increased power to 510 PS (375 kW; 503 hp) by a remapped ECU, a modified air intake and exhaust system and revised supercharger settings.[16]
[edit]Police car: 2009—
A special version of the XF Diesel S was announced in 2009 for the UK police car market, with the first police force orders in 2010.[17] It included a roof-mounted light bar with 3,600 light elements, side alley lights, blue and white strobing LEDs in the grille and blue flashing LEDs along the side of the car, blue and red flashing LED lights in the rear light clusters.[18][19]
[edit]Audio system
The Jaguar XF's standard audio system comprises a 140 watt amplifier driving eight speakers and, dependent on the specification of the model chosen, there are two other audio options available. The "premium" system consists of a 9-speaker (including subwoofer), 320 watt non-branded Alpine stereo system.
There is also an optional surround sound audio system developed in conjunction with the renowned British speaker companyBowers & Wilkins (B&W). At its core there are 14 speaker drive-units (including a subwoofer) which (with the exception of the aluminium high-frequency tweeters) employ B&W's distinctive yellow DuPont Kevlar composite speaker cones. Each front door contains a 168 mm (6.6 in) woofer, a 100 mm (4 in) mid-range speaker and a 25 mm (1.0 in) dome tweeter (the latter two wired in parallel with a crossover), while each rear door houses a similar 168 mm (6.6 in) woofer and 25 mm (1.0 in) tweeter. As a centre speaker there is a 100 mm (4 in) full-range driver, similar to the two 100 mm (4 in) full-range "surround" speakers located on the rear parcel shelf. The subwoofer in this vehicle is located beneath the space-saving spare wheel under the trunk floor, and was believed to be the largest OEM-fitted subwoofer at time of the XF's introduction.[citation needed] It is a 250 mm (10 in) driver in a 35 litre sealed enclosure. These are powered by a 440 watt Class AB DSP amplifier that uses the Dolby Pro Logic II 7.1 algorithm to give 7.1 surround sound from any stereo source.
The B&W system has been reviewed by journalists at Autocar magazine, who proclaimed it the best in-car system they have ever heard.[20]
[edit]Safety
The XF was crash tested in the end of 2010 by EuroNCAP and it gained a four star (4/5 starshttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/51/Star_full.svg/11px-Star_full.svg.pnghttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/51/Star_full.svg/11px-Star_full.svg.pnghttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/51/Star_full.svg/11px-Star_full.svg.pnghttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/49/Star_empty.svg/11px-Star_empty.svg.png) rating. The XF´s result (78% Adult Occupant, 65% Child Occupant, 43% Pedestrian Protection and 71% Safety Assist) was seen as a disappointment by many car magazines.[21][22]
[edit]Awards
Jaguar C-XF was awarded 2007 North American Production Preview Vehicle of the Year Award.[23]
In January 2008, the XF was awarded What Car? Car of the Year award, as well as taking away the prize in the executive car category. It won the executive car category again in 2009.[24]
The XF was also awarded Car of the Year in 2008, as well as Best Executive Car in 2008 and 2009, by What Diesel? magazine.[25]
The XF awarded "2009 Semperit Irish Luxury car of the Year", beating the Volkswagen Passat CC.
The XF 2.7 V6 Diesel Luxury won the 2009 What Car? Best Executive Car award.[26]
The XF 3.0D Luxury won the 2010 and 2011 What Car? Best Executive Car award.[27][28]
Jaguar C-XF: 2007 concept
The Jaguar C-XF (for Concept-XF) was a concept car that was designed to showcase the preliminary styling cues of the upcoming Jaguar XF. The C-XF project was led by Jaguar Director of Design Ian Callum and Head of Advanced Design Julian Thomson. It included a 4.2-litre supercharged V8 engine, a 6-speed automatic transmission with Jaguar Sequential Shift, single slim-wedged headlamps which have evolved from the twin-lamp motif seen on past Jaguars, performance-themed interior, JaguarDrive Selector, Dual View screen, and a Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
The vehicle was unveiled in the 2007 North American International Auto Show.[29][30]
A prototype with a body styling that was based on the S-Type had also been built, but was rejected before the C-XF concept was finalised.[31]

JAGUAR XF

                      JAGUAR

Jaguar has unveiled full details and photos of the first car that will carry Jaguar’s new design language – the Jaguar XF. The Jaguar XF is a 4-door sedan with a sexy roofline (drag coefficient is 0.29cD), and I think it proves Jaguar still has it – the ability to create beautiful and fast cars that has been part of the Jaguar philosophy.

On the inside, the Jaguar XF features the new JaguarDrive Selector, the first rotary dial-based shift-by-wire shifter which Jaguar thinks is more precise and intuitive while saving space at the same time, allowing better utilization of interior space.

There is also plenty of geekery on the interior for those who are into that kind of stuff. For one, the XF’s air-conditioning vents present a flush dashboard surface until the ignition is switched on, at which point they elegantly rotate to the open position. JaguarSense uses touch and proximity control to manage the overhead console lights and glovebox release. The parking brake uses Jaguar’s Electric Paring Brake which you can operate from a small chromed release in the center console. This parking brake automatically disengages when the shifter is put into Drive.

There are 4 engines available, all mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifting. The base petrol unit is an all-aluminium 3.0 liter DOHC V6 engine with Continuously Variable Cam Phasing and variable geometry air intakes. It makes 240 horsepower and 293Nm of torque with 80% of that available below 1,500rpm and up to a maximum speed of 6,800rpm.

There is also a larger normally aspirated 4.2 liter V8 that makes 300 horsepower and 411Nm of torque. A supercharged version of this engine in the SV8 model uses a rotor-type supercharger making 420 horsepower and 560Nm of torque.

Of course, there is also an oil-burning Jaguar XF powered by a 2.7 liter V6 turbodiesel with twin variable geometry turbochargers making 207 PS and 435Nm of torque. Jaguar says this is the lightest diesel engine of it’s type and size, thanks to it’s Compacted Graphite Iron cylinder block and aluminium cylinder heads.

To bring the car to a stop, all XF models use large 326mmx20mm vented front discs and 326mmx20mm rear discs, except for the SV8 Supercharged model which uses larger 355mmx32mm vented front discs.

Jaguar has taken much effort to ensure NVH levels in this car is excellent. At 50km/h, interior noise level is only 65.6dB.
